THE RIVALRY CONTINUES – DEFAR OVER DIBABA IN ZURICH

Results from yesterday’s Zurich Diamond League meet showed the poles of fitness pulling apart as some, like Eunice Sum, Nick Symmonds, Bohdan Bondarenko and Meseret Defar were still riding the high of their World Championship performances in Moscow, while others like Asbel Kiprop, Ezekiel Kemboi, Mathew Centrowitz, Ivan Ukhov and even Usain Bolt looked like the long season had caught up with them.

The most anticipated race of the evening was the 5000 meter showdown between Tirunesh Dibaba and Meseret Defar of Ethiopia, the two most decorated women distance runners of their generation, both arriving as World Champions, Tiru at 10,000 meters, Mezzy in the 5000.

Since they first squared off at the 2002 Carlsbad 5000 as precocious teens (Tiru took 2nd in 15:19 to Mezzy’s 11th in 15:58) theirs has been the matchup that has most intrigued yet frustrated running fans. Though they have met more than 20 times over the years, Zurich was only their third clash since 2009.

In this first duel of the year Defar proved to be two-seconds sharper, 14:32.84 to 14:34.82. Her 58-second last lap – that held more in reserve as I saw it — forced Tirunesh to lead out from 600 meters hoping to use her 10,000 meter strength to grind down Meseret’s 5000 meter closing speed. Tiru’s sister Genzebe even aided the cause by pushing the pace past 4K in an attempt to set up her older sis.

But a cursory look at their seasons shows how Mezzy and Tiru have fashioned their focus in these times of race specialization, a focus that made Mezzy the favorite in Zurich. Though Tiru came into Switzerland as the 5000 meter world record holder (14:11.15, Oslo 2008) and the world leader in 2013 (14:23.68, Paris July 6th), she couldn’t dispose of Mezzy (#2 all-time,14:12.88, Stockholm `08) over the final 600 meters, though she tried mightily.

In Defar’s favor was her focus on shorter distance racing throughout the season. Though she had shown ample strength with a 10,000 win in Sweden June 27th (in a world leading 30:08) most of her attention has been paid to the 5000.

In that regard she tuned up for Zurich last week with a 3000m win at the DN Galan meet in Stockholm after racing 5000 meters in Shanghai (May 18) and Oslo (June 13). She then toured the distance twice more in Moscow at the World Championships earlier this month, once in the prelims then again winning the final (August 14 & 17).

And while Tirunesh had raced over 5000m at the Prefontaine Classic June 1st, then in Paris on July 6th, her focus on the 10,000 in Moscow left her speed just a hair shy when compared to her great rival in Zurich, especially in a race that dawdled (by their very high standards) through the first 4K (11:52.15). We shall see if the tables turn when the two meet up again September 15th at the Bupa Great North Run in Newcastle, England where Tiru should have the upper hand as the defending champion (1:07:35), though Meseret PR’d in February at the Rock `n`Roll Half Marathon in New Orleans (1:07:25).

Next up, however, will be a 10k world record attempt by Dibaba at the Tilburg 10K in the Netherlands this Sunday September 1st, which should set her up quite well for Newcastle. For a complete preview, go to my colleague Alberto Stretti’s fine blog.

In any case, this is exactly the kind of back and forth rivalry that the sport is crying out for. Meseret currently leads their head-to-head in 3000 and 5000 meters, but this eventually could lead all the way to the marathon, and wouldn’t that be a treat? Who would you choose?

Israel To Deport African Migrants To Uganda

Israel has struck a deal to deport tens of thousands of illegal African migrants to Uganda, Haaretz newspaper reported on Friday.

It said that a court gag order barring identification of the destination country had been lifted at its request, but that the government still refused to give any details of the deal.

Citing unnamed sources, the paper said Israel would finance the migrants’ flights to Uganda and their resettlement there and would apparently give each person $1,500 in pocket money.

Haaretz said the head of the Ugandan government’s refugees department, David Apollo Kazungu, had denied in an e-mail that such an agreement existed.

But it quoted Israeli interior minister Gideon Saar as telling a parliamentary committee this week that a senior Israeli official had obtained Kampala’s assent.

It said he had told the internal affairs committee illegal migrants would be transferred to a third country in an operation to begin at the end of September, after forthcoming Jewish holidays.

Israeli immigration authorities say there are about 55,000 illegal African migrants in the country. Many came by foot through Egypt and slipping through the formerly porous border into Israel, which is now being sealed by a sophisticated system of walls and electronic fences.

In 2012, Israel launched a crackdown, rounding up and deporting 3,920 illegals.

Another 2,000 are being held in a detention centre. They have applied for refugee status, but their requests have yet to be processed.

The government said that while 2,295 people crossed the border illegally in January 2012, only 36 got across in the first part of December.

Rising tensions over the growing number of illegal immigrants exploded into violence in May when a protest in south Tel Aviv turned ugly, with demonstrators smashing African shops and property, chanting “Blacks out!”

In June, the Israeli daily Yediot Aharonot reported the government was negotiating to deport up to 2,000 illegal Eritrean immigrants to an unnamed African country in return for supplying it with military, technological and agricultural aid.

While the country was not named, Yediot said the understandings were drafted by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s special envoy, Haggai Hadas, after visits to Uganda, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi and Nigeria.

አቶ ጌታቸው ለመለስ ከማይታዘዙ የህወሓት መሪዎች አንዱና ዋነኛው ነው። ከመለስ ጋር በብዙ ነጥቦች ላይ አይስማሙም፤ የተባለውን ሁሉ የሚሰማ አይደለም። ጠንካራ ነው። ከሙስና የፀዳ የህወሓት ባለስልጣን አቶ ጌታቸው አሰፋ ነው።

የትግራይ ቡድን የአዲስ አበባውን ለማሸነፍ በመለስ ራእይ ስም ከህዝብ መነጠል ችላል። የአዲስ አበባው ደግሞ በሙስና ሰበብ የትግራይ ቡድኑን እያሰረ ይገኛል።

ዛሬ የኢህአዴጉ ሚድያ ‘ፋና ብሮድካስቲንግ ኮርፖሬት’ የሃገር ውስጥ የደህንነት መምሪያ ሃላፊው አቶ ወልደስላሴ ወልደሚካኤል በሙስና ወንጀል ተጠርጥረው በቁጥጥር ስር መዋላቸው ነግሮናል። ጥሩ መጠላለፍ መሆኑ ነው። አቶ ወልደስላሴ የነ አቶ ገብረዋህድ ጓደኛ ነው። አቶ ወልደስላሴ ከታሰረ ወይዘሮ አዜብ መስፍንስ?

የአዲስ አበባ መስተዳድር ካቢኔ በተለይ የአንድነት ፓርቲን ህዝባዊ ንቅናቄ ለማፈን የሚያስችል አዲስ የሰላማዊ ሰልፍና የሕዝባዊ የፖለቲካ ስብሰባ መመሪያ በማዘጋጀት በህገወጥ መንገድ ተግባራዊ ማስደረጉ ታወቀ፡፡
ካቢኔው ያፀደቀው አዲሱ መመሪያ አንድነት ፓርቲ በመላ ሀገሪቱ እያደረገ ያለውን ስኬታማ ህዝባዊ ንቅናቄ ግምት ውስጥ የከተተ እንደሆነ ማንነታቸው እንዲገለፅባቸው ያልፈለጉ የአዲስ አበባ ፖሊስ ኮሚሽን ከፍተኛ ኃላፊ ለአንድነት ፓርቲ አመራሮች ገልፀዋል፡፡ የፖሊስ ኮሚሽን ኃላፊው እንደሚሉት ነሃሴ 10 ቀን 2005 ዓ.ም በአዲስ አበባ ካቢኔ የፀደቀውና ለኮሚሽኑ የተላከው መመሪያ ከሕዝብ ፊርማ ለማሰባሰብ፣በራሪ ወረቀት ለመበተን፣ በማይክራፎን ለመቀስቀስና ፖስተር ለመለጠፍ ውስብስብና የተለያዩ አካላትን ፍቃድ ማግኘትን የግድ የሚል ነው፡፡ ሃላፊው “መመሪያው በተለይ የአንድነት ፓርቲ እንቅስቃሴ በአዲስ አበባ ውጤታማ እንይሆን በችኮላ ተግባራዊ የተደረገ ነው፡፡” በማለት ጨምረው አስረድተዋል፡፡
የመመሪያው አወጣጥ ህገወጥነት እንደተጠበቀ ሆኖ መመሪያው በነጋሪት ጋዜጣ ታትሞ ሳይወጣና ለሚመለከታቸው ባለድርሻ አካላትም ሳይሰራጭ፤ የአዲስ አበባ ፓሊስ ኮሚሽን ህገወጡን መመሪያ እንዲያስፈፅም ከአዲስ አበባ መስተዳድር ከንቲባ ጽ/ቤት ትእዛዝ መተላለፉ በኢትዮጵያ የህግ የበላይነት እንዳበቃለት የሚያሳይ ነው፡፡
የመመሪያው ህገወጥነት አሳሳቢ በመሆኑ የአንድነት ፓርቲ ሊቀመንንበር ዶ/ር ነጋሶ ጊዳዳ እና የፓርቲው ዋና ፀሀፊ አቶ አስራት ጣሴ ከአዲስ አበባ ፓሊስ ኮሚሽን ኮሚሽነር ግርማ ካሳና ከኮሚሽኑ 3 ከፍተኛ ሀላፊዎች ጋር ባደረጉት ውይይት ህገወጡን መመሪያ ፖሊስ ኮሚሽኑ እንዲያስፈፅም መታዘዙን አረጋግጠዋል፡፡
“መመሪያው በ1983 ዓ.ም ከወጣው (አዋጅ ቁጥር 3/1983 ዓ.ም ስለ ሰላማዊ ሰልፍና ሕዝባዊ የፖለቲካ ስብሰባ ሥርዓት የወጣ አዋጅ ገጽ 12) አዋጅ ጋር የሚጣረስ ነው፣ በአዋጁ የአዲስ አበባ መስተዳድር የራሱን መመሪያ ማውጣት እንደሚችልም የሚገልፅ ነጥብ የለም፡፡ ” በሚል የአንድነት ፓርቲ አመራሮች የአዲስ አበባ መስተዳድር ከንቲባ ጽ/ቤት ሃላፊዎችን ቢጠይቁም የከንቲባ ጽ/ቤት ሀላፊ አቶ አሰግድ ጌታቸው “ለሰኞ ተመካክረን ምላሽ እንደጣችኋለን” የሚል ምላሽ ሰጥተዋቸዋል፡፡
የአንድነት ፓርቲ አመራሮች ዛሬ ከሰአት ብሔራዊ ምርጫ ቦርድ ስለመመሪያው የሚያውቀው ነገር እንዳለ በቦርዱ ጽ/ቤት በአካል ተኝተው ጥያቄ ቢያቀርቡም የቦርዱ ዋና ፀሀፊ አቶ ነጋ “ምርጫ ቦርድ እንዲህ አይነት መመሪያ ስለመውጣቱ የሚያውቀው ነገር የለም” የሚል ምላሽ ሰጥተዋል፡፡
አንድነት ፓርቲ “የሚሊዮኖች ድምፅ ለነፃነት” በሚል መሪ ቃል በመላው ሀገሪቱ እያካሄደ ላለው ህዝባዊ ንቅናቄ ከህዝብ ፊርማ ሲያሰባስቡ፣በራሪ ወረቀት ሲበትኑና የመኪና ላይ ቅስቀሳ ሲያካሂዱ ከ72 በላይ የሚሆኑ አባላቱ በአዲስ አበባ ህገወጥ እስር ተፈፅሞባቸው እንደነበር ይታወሳል፡፡
